Sometime around when I was 19, I was walking through central London with my mum. She was meeting her friend at the theatre, and I was giving her directions. We arrived, and within minutes of them excitedly saying hello to one another, her friend, in her usual forthright manner, asked me about my post-university plans. I was utterly blindsided - why hadn’t I thought about this yet?
Truthfully, I was fully immersed in my English Literature degree at King’s College London. I loved it. There was nothing on my reading list I wasn’t interested in. What’s more, my course allowed me to be creative as well as strategic. This is the balance I loved, and if I wanted to keep it in my career, I realised I needed to make some plans.
To my surprise, I heard myself confidently replying with: “PR.”
While PR had always been this elusive profession in my mind - think Samantha Jones - it had never been a career I was consciously pursuing.
However, by - albeit randomly - naming ‘PR’ as my no.1 ambition, I had unknowingly hit the nail on the head as to what I was truly looking for in a job. It was like the penny had dropped: PR would allow me to write, connect with other people, and be both creative and strategic!
Then, after a shadowing day at Edelman’s London office and a placement in the publicity team for Penguin Random House, what was once a random shot in the dark is now an ambition which is set in stone
Naturally, my immediate post-university plans involved a lot (and I mean, A LOT) of job-hunting. Fortunately, one company which stuck out to me due to the global recognition of their holistic approach to PR was BlueSky Education. I completed a two-week internship with BlueSky Thinking, which led to a full-time job offer with BlueSky Education.
I’m grateful that I trusted my instincts, as they led me to this incredible opportunity to work with such a passionate and kind team in an industry which genuinely interests me.
