Meet Rachel Varnham: From Games Journalism to Education PR

Rachel Varnham
After graduating with an undergraduate degree in Sociology from the University of Kent in 2023, I didn’t know what I wanted to do for my career, but I did know I had a passion for academic research and writing.
I went on to complete a master’s degree in creative writing at Anglia Ruskin University, which not only grew my creativity skills, but also my ability to write in various styles and forms. At the same time, I started working as a Staff Writer for multiple gaming and anime websites, writing ‘How To’ guides, features, reviews, and breaking news.
After graduating with my master’s degree, I went full-time and received a promotion to Editor, allowing me to focus on one Apple-gaming focused website and work on growing it. From experimenting with SEO, to researching trends, and even creating video content, I learnt valuable skills when it came to how to write a good story for the media.
A few months into my editorial role, I started working with our marketing department, and I created coverage for some of our clients. This was the first time I’d handled the company’s clients, and I loved being able to work closely with them to create something that both they and I were proud of. Whether it was a press release, writing a feature for a new piece of tech, or even reviewing a client’s new game, I enjoyed the process of sharing a client’s project and getting it out into the world for others to enjoy.
However, it wasn’t until I went to the Tokyo Game Show in 2025 that I realised PR was the perfect career for me. I’ve always been a people person, so being in a role where I closely work with others, but can still be creative with projects, sounded like the perfect move for me. I’m fascinated by the media and storytelling, and from then, I started scouting for PR opportunities.
After seeing that BlueSky Education were hiring, I knew it was my chance. Alongside my background in academia, education is extremely important to me, so a role that allows me to make a genuine difference, as well as begin my career in PR, was a dream come true. As much as I still enjoy games, I’m excited to be in an industry that is so important, and to work with such an amazing team.
